After the Harvest

On today’s program, we talk with Lisa Ousley and Mariah Friend from the stellar non-profit program After the Harvest. After the Harvest rescues nutritious fruits and vegetables missed by commercial harvests and saves the food from going to waste in the fields. After the Harvest collects and donates fresh fruit and vegetables to agencies that serve hungry people, primarily in Greater Kansas City. After the Harvest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is the largest produce donor to Harvesters—The Community Food Network. Host Dave Freeling will talk with Lisa Ousley, Executive Director, and Mariah Friend, Volunteer Coordinator, about how this is done and tell us of opportunities to get involved.

If you want to learn about agricultural innovations and taste the world’s first perennial grain, head to Salina, KS for the 40th annual, three-day Prairie Festival at The Land Institute. Since 1979, the Festival has drawn thousands from around the world who are interested in the sustainable agriculture research being done at The Land Institute. The New York Times has called the Festival an “intellectual hootenanny.” This year’s event will be held from Friday, September 28 to Sunday, September 20 at The Land Institute, 2440 East Water Well Road, Salina, KS.

In celebration of National Public Lands Day on September 29, volunteers around the country will be cleaning up wild places and working to preserve natural resources. To find a volunteer effort near you, search the National Public Lands Day interactive map.
A local event is: Kansas City WildLands – volunteers will help remove invasive woody plants, including exotic shrub honeysuckle that threatens the health of these native areas. Volunteers can sign up to work from 9 a.m. – noon on Saturday, September 29 at either Rocky Point Glades or Blue River Glades. Both groups will start at Lake Lodge, Swope Park, 7310 Oakwood Road, Kansas City, MO. All volunteers will receive a free pizza lunch and REI prizes.
